The installation itself usually takes 2 to 3 working days for a typical yard, spread across about a week so the concrete around the posts can set. The steps before that take more calendar time: the visit and quote, agreement with neighbors on a shared line, the 811 notice and a place on the schedule.
What happens, in order
- Free visit to measure, look at access and write the quote.
- Notice to neighbors on shared lines, and a building permit if the fence is over the no-permit height.
- USA North 811 ticket at least 2 working days before digging, not counting the day it is placed, with the dig area marked in white.
- Old fence removed, posts set in concrete, then curing time.
- Rails, boards or panels and gates go on. The site is cleaned and we walk the fence with you.
What slows a fence job down in San Francisco?
- No side access, so everything goes through the garage or the house.
- The 30-day written notice when neighbors are asked to share the cost.
- Several neighbors on one yard who each need to agree.
- Rock on the hills, caving sand on the west side and old concrete footings.
- Long spells of winter rain.
- Street parking and delivery space for materials.
- Made-to-order metalwork and gates.
We are getting a dog in three weeks and have no fence. What is fastest?
Get on the schedule now, because the 811 notice and any talk with neighbors use up some of the three weeks. Stock materials go up quickest, which means chain link or a plain board fence. If the full yard will not be ready, fence off one corner as a secure area first.
We are putting in a pool. Fence before or after?
Plan the two together and put up most of the fence afterward. The pool or spa contractor needs a way in for equipment, so that stretch stays open until the heavy work is done. The barrier must then be complete and inspected before final sign-off.
My association says fix the fallen panels by Monday and my contractor keeps delaying. Can a handyman patch it?
A handyman patch on a fence you own is allowed and generally satisfies the association's deadline. Read your contract and let the contractor know in writing beforehand. Remember that California limits an unlicensed person to jobs under $1,000 that need no permit.
We measure the line and give you a written quote at no charge. Call (415) 888-9244 or text us a photo of the fence.
