Storm Damaged Fence in San Francisco: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when a winter storm or a fallen tree takes down your fence in San Francisco: fast repair, insurance, neighbor trees and temporary fixes.

Storm Damaged Fence in San Francisco: What to Do and Who Pays

If a storm took your fence down, take pictures of the fence and of what hit it, then call your insurer and a fence company before clearing anything. San Francisco's damaging storms come in winter, when strong south and west winds follow heavy rain and the soil around the posts is saturated.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Send us a photo and tell us roughly how many feet are down. A fallen section with broken posts is a major repair, which national 2026 figures put at $900 to $2,500. After a big storm the whole city calls at once, so the sooner you are on the list, the sooner we get to you.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

The opening can be closed temporarily on the first visit. We brace what is still standing and fill the gap with a temporary panel, and the permanent repair follows. Mention when you call that dogs are in the yard or that the gap opens onto a street, a neighbor's pool or a drop, and the job moves up.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

Ask when you call, because practice differs from company to company. Some charge more for nights and weekends and some do not offer them. The cheaper path is normally a quick temporary closure now and the full repair during regular hours.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Sometimes. A fence is commonly insured as another structure on the property, but your policy wording, your deductible and the cause of the damage settle it. A short city fence can cost less to fix than the deductible. Your insurer or agent has to answer that. We provide a written estimate for the claim.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

In most cases, yours pays for your fence, even though the tree grew next door. That can change when the tree was already known to be dead or dangerous. Put the question to your insurer. Since most rear fences in the city are shared boundary fences, also read the note on California's fence law below.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

Request the adjuster's calculation in writing. Policies often pay the depreciated value of an old fence instead of the cost to rebuild it. Reply with an itemized estimate. If the gap does not close, fixing just the damaged stretch is frequently the sensible outcome.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

For a fence on the boundary, California law presumes both owners benefit equally and are equally responsible for the reasonable cost of maintaining or replacing it, unless they have a written agreement that says otherwise (Civil Code section 841). If the argument is about where the boundary is, only a licensed land surveyor can settle it. See our shared fences page.

The installers were professional and finished the job on time. The vinyl panels are even and durable, though we had to wait a few extra days for materials. Still, the quality and service were worth it.
